Van Halen’s Jawa Shreds “Eruption” in Incredible Stop-Motion Video
Jawas may be small, but there are many things they can do. They are expert scavengers who run a successful small business. They also appreciate the finer things in life. Like mudhorn eggs. These little desert dwellers are tough too. They know how to survive the toughest conditions. And they really know how to rock a dress. But one thing we’ve never seen them do is actually rock. In the galaxy far, far away, it is the responsibility of Ortolans like Max Rebo. Or Biths like good old Figrin D’an. At least it was until now. Because we see Jawas in a whole new spotlight, thanks to a fantastic animated short. It features one of those tenacious scroungers who shred Van Halen’s “Evolution” in a Star wars-Inspirational tribute to the late Eddie Van Halen.
The stop-motion short film “A Jawa Plays Eruption” (which we discovered for the first time at Laughing squid) comes from Thomas Yagodinski. On his YouTube page, he wrote that he wanted to “pay homage to a musical legend” in an “extremely fun way”. Mission more than accomplished. Yagodinski also said he is looking to “challenge” himself by recreating “Eddie’s incredible solo, frame-by-frame via stop-motion animation.” This too gets a big check mark.
To realize his vision, he created his own stop-motion puppet Jawa. He then customized a 16-inch mini-guitar in a 1: 4 scale. As for the incredible set, well, it doesn’t reveal all of its secrets yet. Whatever he did, the result is truly magnificent.

The short film opens with an intro by guitarist Jawa, with subtitles to translate his Jawaese. He describes the late musician as a virtuoso, innovator and “intergalactic legend” who could have originated in the galaxy far, far away. Which is actually believable, since his musical skills were out of this world. The Jawa then uses a guitar he says he picked up to play Eddie’s solo from Van Halen’s “Eruption”. All with excellent stage lighting.
Between the animation, the music, the design and the tribute, the overall impact is obvious. Jawas can also totally rock.
