How to Get Rid of Artwork Inside Windows Search

Have little doodles started showing up in your Windows search bar? Here’s how to eliminate them.

Microsoft continues to introduce creative features in all versions of Windows, which makes the user experience much more fun. However, not all features are for everyone.

One such feature that has received mixed reviews from users is the artwork inside the Windows search bar. In this guide, we’ll see what those colorful icons are and how to turn them off if you want to declutter your search bar.

The search bar illustrations are part of the “Search Highlights” feature that Microsoft introduced beforehand. When you hover or click on the illustration, you’ll see relevant content and images.

This content is generally related to the illustrations presented. For example, if you see a boots icon in the taskbar, the content will likely be related to hiking, trails, or something similar. The pop-up window will then display options such as trials near you, hiking tips, and tent shops.

This information is different for organizations and regular users. If you’re signed in to Windows using your work account, you’ll see information about your organization and its employees. On your personal PC, you will see more generic informative content.

How to Disable Artwork in Windows Search Icons

While this feature is creative, it may not be for everyone. Fortunately, Microsoft lets you customize the Windows taskbar in a number of ways, and you can turn off images by disabling search highlights in the taskbar settings.

Here’s how:

  1. Right-click on your Windows taskbar.
  2. Picking out Look for > View Research Highlights.

After unchecking the Search Highlights option, the illustrations will disappear immediately. If that doesn’t work for you, you can also use Group Policy to disable search highlights.

If you are a Windows 11 user, you can also follow these steps:

  1. Launch Windows Settings and head to the Privacy and Security section.
  2. Click on Search permissions.
  3. Go to the More Settings section and turn off the toggle for View Research Highlights.

Find illustrations, Solved

There is no doubt that the search highlight feature brings more life and color to the Windows taskbar. However, if you don’t want it for any reason, you can disable it by following the steps outlined above. For a more personalized experience, you can even try customizing your taskbar icons.
